The festive season is a time for celebration for many, but it can also bring unique challenges for those working with children in sport and physical activity. With changes to routines, special events, and increased social activities, it’s important to keep safeguarding at the heart of everything we do.

Here are our top tips to help you create a safe, positive environment for children this Christmas holidays.

Top tips for safeguarding children at Christmas

Plan ahead

Review your safeguarding policy and make sure everyone knows what to do if they have concerns. Share key contacts with staff and volunteers. Make sure someone is on duty to be contactable for any safeguarding concerns.

Check venues and activities

If you’re using new venues or hosting special events, ensure they meet safety standards and have appropriate risk assessments.

Communicate with parents

Keep parents informed about schedules, transport arrangements, and any changes to usual routines. Remind them of key contacts and helplines that can support them during this busy time.

Check social media

Be mindful of photos and videos shared online. Always get consent before posting images of children.

Look out for signs of stress

The holidays can be overwhelming for some children. Encourage open conversations and provide support where needed.

Stay alert to online risks

If you’re running online sessions or sharing content online, make sure platforms are secure and monitored.
