5 questions to ask sport competition organisers

Last updated: 27 Aug 2025 Topics: Parents in sport Safeguarding standards

We've designed these posters to help parents choose the best sports competitions for their child.

It's tricky for parents to understand whether or not a sport competition will be safe, suitable and enjoyable for their child. It's especially tricky if the competition involves body contact or the potential risk of injury.

The posters cover five key questions parents and carers should ask organisers when considering if their child should enter a sport competition.

1. What rules will the competition follow?
2. How safe will my child be?
3. How are the officials and judges trained?
4. Will they wear protective gear?
5. How are children grouped for matches?

The organisers should be happy to answer these questions. If not, or they give incomplete answers, then a parent should feel comfortable to ask for more information or consider whether their child should compete.

We encourage active partnerships, national governing bodies, local authorities, leisure centres and sport venues to print these posters and put them up where parents can see them.
