Pay-as-you-go training courses

Last updated: 24 Sept 2025

There are currently no formal qualifications specifically for safeguarding children in sport, but we’ve developed courses to help you and your team to keep children safe in sport.

Who is this training for?

This training is for anyone working in roles in sport or physical activity with responsibility for children and young people.

NSPCC elearning training

The NSPCC has developed a variety of elearning courses which you access via our Learning website and complete online. To get started and gain better safeguarding knowledge, see the below sport-specific courses:

Child protection in sport and physical activity training
This course will introduce you to your role in protecting children from harm, and what to do when concerns arise.

Safer sports events training
By taking this course, you’ll be introduced to safeguarding and child protection for sports events.

NSPCC national training programme courses

There are a range of NSPCC national training programmes to help you to develop an understanding of specific issues and legislation which may differ across the UK. See our sport-specific course available to book now.

Designated safeguarding lead for sport and leisure training
A one-day course for recently appointed safeguarding leads at a leisure facility or sports organisation, or if you are looking to improve your organisation’s safeguarding and child protection practices.

Find out more information about the other NSPCC national training courses on the NSPCC Learning website.

CPSU and UK Coaching training

We developed the following training courses in partnership with UK Coaching:

Safeguarding and protecting children training
This course is delivered by UK Coaching or can be delivered by the local safeguarding partnerships (LSPs) or active partnerships.

Renewal: safeguarding and protecting children
There are three versions of this course. Each version includes the core refresher module along with an additional module that focuses on: (1) positive parents in sport; (2) digital kids in sport; or (3) protecting children with disabilities in sport.

Safeguarding and protecting children for young coaches
Helps young volunteers and coaches aged 16-18 years old to understand and recognise safeguarding and child protection best practice within sport.

Welfare officer training - Time to Listen
For club welfare officers (CWOs) who have attended an introductory safeguarding course such as safeguarding and protecting children training. The course helps CWOs to understand how their role fits into a wider safeguarding network and apply this learning to case studies.
