Club framework for safeguarding standards in sport (NI)

Last updated: 17 Jun 2025 Topics: Safeguarding framework

The framework provides a set of safeguarding standards for children's sports clubs in Northern Ireland.

The Club Framework for Safeguarding Standards in Sport helps organisations work through what they need to do to protect children and young people involved in sport.

The framework is based on good practice for the voluntary sector as outlined in Keeping Children Safe: Our Duty To Care. And is informed by legislation, guidance, evidence from research and experience of what works.

It was developed to support clubs to implement the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children’s Sport, first published by Sport Northern Ireland and Sport Ireland in 2000.

When fully implemented, the standards should create a safer environment where children can enjoy sport and get the very best from their involvement. As well as provide parents with increased confidence and peace of mind.

Contents of the club framework

  1. Safe recruitment and selection
  2. Effective management of staff and volunteers
  3. Reporting concerns
  4. Codes of behaviour
  5. Sharing information
  6. General safety and management of activities
