Press release: Safe Sport Day

Last updated: 08 Aug 2024 Topics: Safeguarding children

We are proud to announce that we are backing Safe Sport Day (August 8), a global initiative aimed at promoting the safety and well-being of young athletes.

This endorsement aligns with the charity’s ongoing Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport campaign, which calls on sports and activity groups across the UK to participate and prioritise the safeguarding of children and young people.

The campaign, which is spearheaded by the CPSU, raises awareness about safeguarding practices in sports and activities across the UK. The initiative strives to help clubs foster strong, trust-based relationships with parents, carers, and children.

Michelle, head of the CPSU, said:

“Ensuring children are safe in sport is the reason that we do what we do. As a partner with UNICEF and one of the founder members of the International Safeguards for Children in Sport we are proud to be supporting Safe Sport Day.

“This is a day where we want organisations around the world to celebrate what they are doing to make sport safer for all. Working with organisations across the world to identify and share best practice has meant that there is a wealth of information for organisations to help them safeguard their participants, wherever they are on that journey.

“A key factor of keeping children safe in sport are parents and carers. Sport is safest when everyone plays their role in keeping children safe! Our aim for Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport is to bring the sporting community together, create an open and inclusive culture where parents feel able to speak up and raise any questions or concerns and help keep sport safe and fun for everyone.”

This summer, the CPSU is encouraging communities to come together through Team Huddles – events designed to foster social connections and raise awareness about safeguarding.

These gatherings can take various forms, such as watch-along parties for the Paralympics, community fun days, fundraisers, or inviting the NSPCC to present safeguarding workshops. These events are opportunities to build connections, discuss safeguarding practices, and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for young athletes.

To support these efforts, the CPSU is offering free downloadable Team Huddle activity packs, which are designed to help conversations about safeguarding and supervision, reinforcing the importance of child welfare in sports.

The NSPCC is calling on local clubs to share their Team Huddle event details and photos by using the hashtag #SafeinSport and tagging @NSPCC on social media, and also to engage local news and sports reporters.
