Thank you for getting involved in Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport Week

Last updated: 03 Nov 2022 Topics: Safeguarding children

This time last month thousands of you across the nation joined us in celebrating the launch of our NEW Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport campaign.

The campaign is aimed at helping parents and carers to play their part in safeguarding their children from poor practice and abuse in sport.

We were delighted to see so many of you coming together to share the message of the importance of parents’ role in safeguarding children in sport.

Sir Bradley Wiggins was among many of the celebrities supporting the campaign. Talking in an article by BBC Sport about the campaign, he said:

“We must make sport safe for children and make it easier for parents – and all people in sport – to recognise and understand how they themselves can support a safer sports environment.”

You can read the full article on the BBC Sport website.

Our campaign also featured on BBC news in an interview with former professional footballer, Paul Stewart, who has lived experience of childhood sexual abuse, and our very own Paul Stephenson.

How you got involved

Thank you to every one of you who got involved throughout the week. Here are just a few things that you got up to:

  • sharing information about the safeguarding processes, procedures and personnel in place within your organisation
  • some clubs invited parents along to get involved in a session with their children
  • Welsh Gymnastics produced a video discussed the activities that they had planned to get parents involved and talked about safeguarding during Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport week
  • North Yorkshire Sport shared an article written by a member of staff, which discussed safeguarding and the campaign from his point of view as both a professional and a parent
  • the safeguarding lead for Get Berkshire Active wrote a blog post about his crucial role in safeguarding within the Active Partnership

What's next?

The motivation behind launching Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport was to better reflect the need to provide parents with information, support and resources to recognise and respond to concerns at their child’s sports club year-round. Going forward we are committed to updating and building upon our existing information and resources for parents and carers throughout the year.

We will continue to host Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport week – our annual focus week falling during the first week of October, aimed at raising awareness of the crucial role of parents in safeguarding in sport.

So, what can you do to continue to play your part in Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport?
